I've heard that the core Serious Sam fanbase is very disappointed with the game, which is understandable because the game has many features which seem very out of place for a Serious Sam game, like the skill tree, noticeable weapon spread, AI companions and so on. The only 'problem' that the game has is that it is very repetitve and samey, but thats a given for any Serious Sam game.

The game also has some great set piece moments, like a motorcycle ride through a field full of kamikazes or 2 seperate mech sections, which are the ultimate power fantasies of the game. The arsenal is huge and varied, the enemy variety is great and the bosses are spectacular. Some levels have upwards of 3000 total enemies, with some encounters making you fight more than 200 enemies at once. The gameplay formula for Serious Sam games is always very simple: One man against a gigantic horde of enemies.

Despite of its glaring technical problems the gameplay of Serious Sam 4 is so enjoyable and great that I simply didnt give a shit. But since I was a big fan of the previous game I said 'fuck it' and picked it up anyways. I thought the same when I read the reviews. Now hearing this you'd probably think that Serious Sam 4 is a bad game and isnt worth buying.

It runs poorly, dropping to below 40 fps on a medium to high end PC sometimes, it has a stupidly high amount of bugs and technical problems, the graphics are outdated and bad, the characters are flat and uninteresting and the story is irrelevant and boring. And even with 4 hotfixes the game still is not in the best place.
